I'll preface this by saying that the recent separation of Terrain and Obstacle warnings is a big improvement. Still, I'm puzzled (or confounded) by a few things.
I have version 9.8.4 on the iPhone and also on the 740.
I fly a Searey amphibian, often down low, so I keep Terrain warnings turned off to avoid as many distractions as possible. (But some still persist.)
In both devices I go to Map Mode and see that Terrain Highlights is OFF/unchecked.
Obstructions is ON/checked, so I tap the gear--and get the Terrain Alerts dialog. That makes no sense to me.
In that dialog the items are:
- Enable Terrain Alerts
- Map Highlights ...
- Reduce Alerting When Approaching ...
- Alert Thresholds (Strict) [my current test setting]
- Enlarge Obstruction Icons [ON/checked]
- Close
I don't understand what those items have to do with Obstructions, except of course for Enlarge Obstruction Icons. What am I missing?
Now for the obstructions, themselves:
With Enlarge Obstruction Icons ON/checked and zoomed in pretty far I see the obstacle altitude and height, plus a red or magenta circle around it. But it's not big, and not flashing or doing anything else that would attract my attention. That doesn't seem like much of a warning--so I'm probably missing something else here. But what?
On the same screen I also see the red triangle with exclamation point. When I tap that I get a big fat TERRAIN warning (in two parts) that demands my action. How do I disable ALL of the terrain warnings? At 100 feet AGL I already know about the terrain (except over glassy water, but that's a different matter entirely).
I happened to run this test while driving toward a drawbridge near where I live. But if I had been flying it would have been terribly distracting. And if I had been flying in unfamiliar territory I might never have noticed the Obstruction at all. (Well, it's hard to miss seeing a big bridge; but a wire is usually invisible.)
So I hope someone can help me figure this stuff out. I've attached four screen grabs (which I got out of order--sorry!; should be MapMode, GearMenu, Obstruction Alert, TerainAlert).
