Anything you install on your certified aircraft is going to cost much more that for experimentals. 

My ADSB (in/out) cost $1500 and I installed it myself in one hour. My ADSB does not give my A/C ID when squawking 1200 VFR and when in ATC control squawk I want them to see my ID so they can keep me separated from other traffic.

One midair in my life was more than too much. Been there...done that...don't want to do that again.

If your are concerned about future airspace issues..just wait until they privatize ATC and airlines get preferential treatment.

I can recall when pilots complained because transponders were required.

Nice Rant. However, I'll keep my $1100 ADSB. Thank you. 

It has already more than earned its cost.

I also have a rearview mirror (to help me see) and a smoke system (to help me be seen).

Call it belt and suspenders mentality.

One mid-air was more than enough for me.
