on my iphone 6s, in flight, out of range of adsb, ifly will *always* attempt an internet wx, *even if the setup box is NOT selected.*

put another way, if ADSB towers are out of range, I *cannot stop* ifly from attempting to download wx via cellphone data.

the top setup radio button, which enables/disables wx via internet *has no effect*.

worse, after a while, ifly will drop the local wifi connection to the onboard uavionix wifi, and announce “no heartbeat”

the only workaround is putting the iphone into airplane mode, effectively turning off all cell service and data, then locking the wifi to the uavionix local network. however, this comes with a cost: you no longer receive phonecalls or any cell data.

i  ve reported this to ifly, run the diagnostics, to no avail.

Hi Bruce,

I've put this on the bug list, we'll test and correct this issue or otherwise figure out what's up.  But even if it's attempting to download wx in flight, this should not have any negative affects.  And it certainly wouldn't cause the wifi to drop - there might be something else going on there.   Have you talked with support about this problem?

Thanks, Walter, for your interest. Yes, I have corresponded extensively with Jesse about the dropped WiFi and the unstoppable downloads. (I created several general logs and adsb logs.)

I also mentioned this issue to a gentleman (whose name I did not get)  when he recently helped me extend my subscription. He said he was personally familiar with this, advising me that I needed to put my iphone into airplane mode, and lock the WiFi to the Uavionix ADSB unit (i.e., forcing the iphone to check in before switching WiFI sources.)

Also worth mentioning again, is that this happens when there s poor or no communication with ADSB towers, and at altitudes under 3500 ft, when both terrestrial WiFI sources and cellphone data are still available at this lower altitude, even if ADSB towers are indicated as out of range.

My theory, again, is that despite the setup constraint not to try to download wx in flight, when ADSB tower communication is lost, or idled too log, the iphond or ifly still looks to another source, even in flight.

As consolation, at least I do know when this is happening. In addition to the iphone dropping traffic, wx and warning the gps is lost or weak, it also indicates No Heartbeat.

My fix is to turn off Wifi, turn it back on, and reestablish communication with the Uavionix unit.

Fortunately, through all this, I am able to continue to see both traffic and wx services displayed thru a GRT display that is hardwired to the Avionix unit.

Thx, again, Walter for your interest.

I ve previously reported that ifly will download data via cell in flight, even if the setup is configured to prohibit it. That the only way to stop ifly from using cell data is to turn on airplane mode, and lock the wifi to the local network.

I ve discovered that unless  iphone is put into airplane mode, ifly will look for and use cellphone data, not only with iphone 6, and also with my new iphone 7.

This is on the bug list for review.  I'm very confident it's not related to any wifi issues, such as the one that started this thread.
