Going to pull the trigger on IFly app now that they are integrated with Xplane sim and am looking for recommendations as to which 7" tablet to get (want to keep it small for yoke mount in the real plane). Would like to keep it under $250. Anything in particular features on a tablet that are must haves? Any brand/models that are highly recommended by users? Appreciate any feedback.

I won't go down the road of actually recommending a tablet, but when I was looking around for a better one than the one I was using, the iPad Mini 4 -- "better" meaning brighter -- the iPad Mini 5 was my first consideration, at around 500 nits.  In 2013, there was Nexus 7 that had 583 nites. Go figure.  Then I found out that the iFlyGPS hardware is 1100 nits!  So, that was definitely a strong contender.  If you need -- absolutely need -- your display to be daylight-readable (with direct sunlight on the display), you'll be disappointed at most anything less than 800 nits.  Yet, my iPad Mini 4 still has the best overall image of any tablet I've tried (and I imagine the Mini 5 is slightly better and slightly brighter).  In direct sunlight, the Mini 4 doesn't cut it, but it isn't very often in direct sunlight, so I still rely heavily on it, because it's so readable.  What it lacks in brightness it more than makes up for in other areas.  The iFlyGPS device is certainly very bright, but lacks in other areas, IMO.  So, there isn't one that is best.  You just have to decide which features are important to you, and go look for them.

Thanks for the info. Trying to keep it somewhat cheap to start with. I think I am just going to try the Galaxy Tab A 8". if it doesn't work I will give it to my wife for reading on. I have a little glare shield I can velcro to the top of it for some sun issues. Costco has them for $119 with a free 32 gb miniSd card. Almost can't not try it for that price. I always have my Note phone as a back up, that screen is readable in direct sunlight.

I have used an early iPad mini that was not reliable, so I replaced it with a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 (non-cell connected) which fit in the same mount as the iPad mini, and worked fine - not as bright as the 740, but with one on each side of the cockpit, one is always readable. This year I replaced the Tab S2 with a Tab A as it is cell connected, and was "free" with a data plan. It is more rectangular - talled and narrower than the Tab S2 - which I don't like as much - but it seems to function fine (now that 11.0.63 is installed).
This is not a recommendation, just my experiences and choices. I do consider the 740 the primary and most reliable device, the tablets are for redundancy and the co-pilot.

Been using a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7" (Wi-Fi only) for years in high wing aircraft (no skylights). (Still available on Amazon < $100). Plenty bright and clear under most conditions, verticle or on lap. Rarely shade with a hand to read small print. May not be as good under a bubble canopy / direct sun.
