Well, well, well...

The TAILBEACON is finally approved and should ship soon!

The long and winding journey is almost at an end!

QUESTION:

I am expecting my TAILBEACON any day now...looking forward to it.

Since I am too late for the rebate (did not really expect or need it anyway) is there anything special I need to do to "register it" with the FAA?

Any special flight I still have to take? I am in a certified aircraft.

Thanks! Mike N714AJ

For my Grumman, I just did about a 45 minute flight in my local area at about 5500'.  I know I have great ADS-B coverage from ground stations in my area.  I did some standard rate 360 turns (no aerobatics) .  Since I was not aplying for a rebate (I already got one), this was fine (no "Rule Airspace").  I got a clean report for the flight from the FAA and I sent a copy of that report with the 337 from my I/A to the FAA.  I have about 5 hours now since installing it.

I have heard other people with SkyBeacons or tailBeacons having to go in and do software tweeks to get a passing report.  I did not have any issues there.

I have had issues connecting my iPhone to the tailBeacon, it seems to connect intermintently.  I called uAvionics about this last week, and they suggested I try putting the iPhone in "Airplane Mode" (disabling celular service).  I have not tried that out yet.

Thanks Rich,
Sounds easy - just want to MAKE SURE I am good to go before flying into the Washington, DC area -- do not want to fly in and then have to be stuck there!

One more thing -- did you have to do a re-cert on your altimeter encoding system at an avionics shop? I have heard this - do not want to do it if possible as the shop is 50+ miles away.

Apprecaite it.

I did for my Cessna where I swapped out the old transponder for a 1090 Stratus ESG, even though I kept the old encoder and did not touch the static system.  It was a good thing though as some issues were found.

For a UAT like the tailBeacon where it is basicly slaved to the existing transponder, I know of no requrement to do that, and I did not for the tailBeacon (or the NavWorxs that I had in the 182).
