Walter:

First let me say what a great unit the iFly 700 is. It is awesome compared to my previous two Garmins. And thanks for keeping it affordable. I cannot say enough good things about the follow-up support from you, Ed, and Shane.

I have a question about the intended implementation of ADS-B weather and traffic later this year. Will we have to purchase a separate ADS-B receiver? Will AP recommend one that has been tested successfully with the iFly and make one available through the AP store? Will we also have to be able to transmit an ADS-B signal in order to have traffic displayed? At current prices, roughly about how much will it cost in additional hardware to participate?

Just trying to anticipate future costs so I can start saving up for them.

Thanks,

Ralph, Tri-Pacer

Hi Ralph,

Thanks for the nice words about us and the iFly!

You will need to purchase an ADS-B receiver. We don't currently have plans to sell one on our store, but we will publish a list of units we've tested for compatibility with the iFly. The one we're developing against is called the Sky Radar, http://www.skyradar.net/. Others will follow. Today you can expect to pay around $900 for a "portable" device. 6 months ago the going price was $1200. I expect prices to keep falling.

You will need a full blown transceiver to transmit your position. I'm not aware of a non-certified (ie, inexpensive) product...but this market is changing quickly.

Hope this helps,
Walter

Walter,

I sure hope you go forward with the implementation of ADS-B as today I cancelled my XM weather and ordered the Skyradar to use on my Iphone until I can use it on the Ifly. Also still wishing for potrait mode.

Great product !
