As for your "unless anyone has actually done it?" comment, I have had an iFly 700, 720, and 740 stretching over at least 5 years or more.  I often copied from a working SD card to the desktop, and then from the desktop to another SD card (straight "drag and drop" copy on a Windows PC; no need for "cloning" software).  That's how I made my backups.  As a beta tester, I would often carry a "production" as well as a "beta" card, in case the beta version bombed.  All copies were made using the simple method I described.  I even changed SD card sizes and copied music and TV shows onto the cards for in flight entertainment.  With the exception of "Streets", it all worked fine.  I haven't had the 740 for about a year now, but I doubt if anything has changed in regards to making a backup copy using drag and drop.  The important thing to get right is to make absolutely sure the files end up in the same paths - meaning whatever files are in the original root directory need to remain in the root directory, etc.  For instance, if you copy everything from the SD card to a desktop folder named "iFly", you can't just copy the "iFly" folder to a new SD card because that adds an additional folder to the SD card path.  You'll need to first *open* the "iFly" folder, and copy all the folder's contents to the new SD card, which puts everything in the proper place.  That's the only "gotcha" I can remember.

I think the only issue is the Streets software.  If you're not concerned about that you can clone the disk or copy the files, whichever you prefer.  I have always had better luck with cloning because it makes an exact copy.  Whichever works best for you is what matters, as long as it works.
