ifly740 durability

i never had a gps before where i needed to update before every flight [TFRs, weather], so, my ifly740 comes home from the airport, rather than being left attached to the plane. i wonder a what point the power, usb, and antennae plugs are going to wear out? i still have my lowrance as backup, even tho the database is years out of date, but, 12 years later no issues because it stays in place. i wonder how the ifly is going to handle hundreds of plugging in.

Isn't there a way to update using an SD card or WIFI from your phone or something to so you can leave the 740 in the airplane?

Kevin,
I have a 720 and a 740b. If you just need to update weather and TFRs, get a ping ADS-B in to update them while in the air. Works great. The weather at each airport and winds aloft alone are worth it to me. If you are planning to get ADS-B out and in later for the mandate. you may want to wait.

I have my gps mounted on a suction mount and regularly take it home for large updates (maybe once a month). There is also wifi in my hangar and also in the main hangar at the airport. An easy way to update is to turn on in hangar, start update and then have coffee with the other pilots. That way you don"t unplug anything.

The 7xx works quite well without an antennae, so I don't use it. The power wire is all IO have to unplug when I do take it home. Have not noticed any problems yet but guess it could happen..

As mentioned you can take sd card home and update at home on your computer; but I Love the wifi update process over the sd card update process so I don't remove the card.

I owned a 700/720/740 for several years. WalMart, Harbor Freight, and similar stores sell a plastic ammo box that makes a perfect weatherproof case big enough for the device, power cords, cables, other accessories, and logbook. I lined one side with thin foam and always placed the screen against the foam. To prevent accidental damage to the ports, I was careful to never plug a cable into the device until it was secured and ready to power up. In well over 1,000 hours of use, I never had a problem with the plugs.

You don't get winds aloft via ADS-B.
