I'm a little confused by this, but I think you need to consider them as two different devices doing two different things.  Once your ADS-B out device is installed, setup, and working properly, I don't know why you would ever need to connect to it again except maybe to test something or change a setting, etc.  It is going to emit an ADS-B out signal for reception by the ground stations and other aircraft.

ADS-B in is not even required.  However, if you want to see other aircraft that have ADS-B out and if you want to receive ADS-B information from the ground stations, then you need an ADS-B in device such as your Stratux.  You would need to connect an iFly GPS device or tablet running iFly GPS to the Stratux to depict the information you are receiving via ADS-B in.

In other words, unless you have a single device that is both ADS-B in and out, they are really two different systems doing two different things.

It looks like I would want ADSB In along with the Out.

It seems that there is an advantage to having in for weather, Notams and other information.

So it would be nice to have In working along with the tailBeacon. I might have to have In on my phone if I can't get Stratux and tailBeacon to work together.

Garmin, Stratus (Appareo), and other are complimenting In with their Out.

What is the difference between ADS-B Out and ADS-B In?

ADS-B Out refers to an aircraft broadcasting its position and other information. ADS-B In refers to an aircraft receiving the broadcasts and messages from the ground network such as TIS-B and FIS-B. ADS-B In is not mandated by the ADS-B Out rule. If an operator chooses to voluntarily equip an aircraft with ADS-B In avionics, a compatible display is also necessary to see the information. Refer to AC 20-165B for information on ADS-B OUT and AC 20-172B on ADS-B IN installation and certification.

What are FAA ADS-B In broadcast services?

ADS-B In pilot cockpit advisory services consist of Flight Information Service-Broadcast (FIS-B) and Traffic Information Service-Broadcast (TIS-B). These are free services transmitted automatically to aircraft equipped to receive ADS-B In.

FIS-B provides a broad range of textual/graphical weather products and other flight information to the general aviation community. FIS-B is only available on the 978MHz Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) equipment. FIS-B includes the following:

  • Aviation Routine Weather Reports (METARs)

  • Non-Routine Aviation Weather Reports (SPECIs)

  • Terminal Area Forecasts (TAFs) and their amendments

  • NEXRAD (regional and CONUS) precipitation maps

  • Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) Distant and Flight Data Center

  • Airmen's Meteorological Conditions (AIRMET)

  • Significant Meteorological Conditions (SIGMET) and Convective SIGMET

  • Status of Special Use Airspace (SUA)

  • Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs)

  • Winds and Temperatures Aloft

  • Pilot Reports (PIREPS)

TIS-B is an advisory-only service available to both 1090ES and UAT equipment users. TIS-B increases pilots' situational awareness by providing traffic information on all transponder-based aircraft within the vicinity of the ADS-B In equipped aircraft receiving the data.

pielit, there's still some confusion going on here.  Lemme try again.

  • In general, the functions of ADSB In and Out operate independently.  Some manufacturers may provide devices that partially combine those functions.  Your setup (like many, including mine) does not.  In your case, the Tailbeacon handles only ADSB Out, and the Stratux handles only ADSB In.
  • Ideally, you would connect to the uAvionix Tailbeacon's wi-fi only one time during intial setup to configure it properly, and then never again.  Nothing else will need to connect to its wifi, either.
  • When set up properly, your ADSB Out device should operate silently in the background, outside of your awareness. ATC computers and flight controllers, and other ADSB-In equpped aircraft listening on the same frequency will see its data, but you will not.
  • When set up properly, your portable onboard display devices (phone, tablet, dedicated EFB device, etc.) should be connected to your Stratux (ADSB In device), and only your Stratux.  All ADSB-related data you will look at in the cockpit will come to you via the Stratux.
  • In the background, without your direct awareness, the data your Tailbeacon ADSB Out device sends to ATC will drive how ADSB In data is transmitted to you from the ground.  You do not have to do anything extra to make that work.

Does all that make sense?

I agree with everything you said and have stated most if not all, except for your third point.

In my experience with Stratux is that I receive mostly from ground stations and it seems sometimes from someones 'puck', I think.

My thinking is that with having ADSB Out, although it's 978 MHz, I will be carrying around a puck and will see more hits. Am I wrong in this aspect?

So with that reasoning, I would like to have both In and Out working in harmony.

Once again, they don't work in harmony.  Your ADS-B out will send a signal to other airplanes to see you and to the ground stations.  This will provide the ground stations with your aircraft information and will also activate the ground station to send information back toward your airplane.

If you want to receive the incoming information and see other aircraft as well as weather information, etc., that is what your Stratux will receive via ADS-B in.

Yes, you will need ADS-B out to fly in class B, and C airspace beginning in 2020.  You will need ADS-B in to receive the information being broadcast by other airplanes and the ground stations.  Your ADS-B in is limited without ADS-B out, so yes, you want both.  However, again, they are two separate systems unless you have a device that does both.  You will NEVER want to directly receive a signal from your own ADS-B out device except maybe during installation, setup, testing, etc.
