Before using IFLY I was using Avare.

Using GPS altitude and ground speed it calculated glide ratio.

It was a handy feature which could easily be added to IFLY.

I recall some discussions about filtering the emergency mode in NRST for glideable airports based on the aircraft glide ratio provided by the user, and wind.

But it would be nice to know rate of descent from cruise to pattern altitude for a normal descent.  Is that what you used it for?

Other than engine loss, does anyone glide from cruise altitude to pattern altitude? I use 300 feet per minute with power. Most others probably use 500 feet per minute.

I use 500 FPM for the descent.

It is very useful to see how the glide ration changes with the wind and weight considerations.

When I used it with Avare it taught me so much.

We practice engine off landings at a nearby dry lake and with this feature, we could play with different speeds to optimize the glide.

Safe pilots are always learning.
