I am going to beat an apparently a dead horse yet again. It would be nice to have map overlays which could be stored and retrieved as needed. If I am flying Area A today it would be nice to have the boundaries and grid for that area overlaid on the map. If I am flying Area B tomorrow, it would be nice to just pull up the previously-created overlay for that area, etc. The Foreflight guys have that feature, but we don't.

The "Sketch" feature could be enhanced to enable straight lines, point-to-point, etc., and allow the desired sketches to be selectively displayed rather than the current global on/off option.

Would love to be able to draw a rectangle and download a satelite view so I can distinguish between trees, fields, and lakes when I'm forced to land off airport in the dark.

If I understand you correctly, I think you are asking for a different feature than the OP.

OP asked for the ability to download maps in the preflight timeframe.  Unless you can predict before you take off where your forced landing is likely to occur, or you're willing to download a huge amount of data, that's not going to satisfy your request.

We're not at the point where the average iFly user can expect constant, reliable internet access in the cockpit.  It's not practical to expect real-time downloading of map data while in flight.

Maybe you were envisioning being able to draw a rectangle over, say, half of Arkansas or something, and download that pre-flight.  Depending on what level of resolution you want (pretty high resolution if you want to pick out an open field), then that's probably an impractical amount of data.
